How to Follow Through on Your Goals Whether You Feel Like it or Not
By Jill on Oct 16, 2009 in General
Have you ever felt stuck or lacked motivation on any given day?
Have you ever found yourself making a commitment and when the time came to follow through and do what you said you were going to do, you failed to follow through just because you didn’t feel like it?
One of the primary distinctions I have discovered between people who habitually achieve their goals and create the results they desire is that successful people follow through whether they feel like it or not.
Successful people follow through whether they feel like it or not.
Imagine scheduling your wedding and the minister failed to show up to your ceremony because he/she didn’t feel like it.
Imagine your kids not doing their homework because they didn’t have the motivation, they don’tĀ feel like doing it.
It sounds preposterous that we can be so moody and fickle when it comes to our goals in life, but for many individuals, this is how they habitually operate.
The key to following though andĀ getting things done is to have a plan and follow through on it long after the mood has left you. That is true commitment.
So it’s a gloomy day, you have a goal to exercise but you don’t feel like it. Do it anyways.
Whenever you set a goal, write it down, set a deadline and make a list of 10 compelling reasons why you MUST achieve this goal.
You need to determine your motivation up front when you first set the goal.
Every time you follow through whether you feel like it at the moment or not, you build your self confidence, commitment and resilience muscles. You condition yourself to becoming a goal achiever, instead of a goal setter.

I’m here cheering you on Evelyn! It’s funny, the more you follow through, the faster you will increase your desire and motivation. Just remind yourself of what you are trying to achieve and why it is important to you.

I LOVE this tip! Motivation is so elusive sometimes and when my clients want me to motivate them I get worried because I help couples prepare for marriage and if they need motivation for that, maybe they shouldn’t be getting married!!
Thanks Jill!

Hello Lady Jill,
It was good to listen to your words on the subject of Motivation and making the Committment to achieve your goals. I wrote 10 things that inspire me to achieve my goals more than 10 years ago and anyone who knows me personally will tell you that I am a very determined character with the things that I do but as I always remind myself, it is great to hear others confirm the thoughts you have. I continue to keep my head held high no matter how many hurdles I may come across and infact I believe those hurdles are only testing your committment in the things that you believe in, so its good for you to be tested. I am still very much Living my Dream and will continue till the day that I pass. All the Best. Tony T

Hi Jill,
Thank you for your encouraging words. I am struggling with a big disappointment this past week. I was called by the Dr. Phil Show and ask to be on the show as a result of my new book, You Lost Your Marriage Not Your Life, How to Get the Life You Want Your Way. Three days before I was to fly to LA, they called and said they were unable to pull that segment together and plan to do it another time. I wanted to cry rivers!

Hey, Jill,
Great tip about motivation. This very much applies to writing. If I only wrote when the muse visited, I’d hardly write at all, but once I start writing and pick up some momentum, there’s no stopping me!
Thanks for the reminder!

BARBARA- I have been there, same thing happened to me many times, that’s show business, that’s the media. It happens all the time, I know you will have many more opportunities to showcase your work and touch many lives. Sometimes we get so caught up in one event, if it doesn’t happen we feel deflated. I can assure you there are many other media outlets you can invest your energy into in the meantime. Keep on Keeping on

CORY- We can encourage and lead a person to discover and untap their motivation, but they have to identify it from within. Once they realize this, life is so much easier. Keep up the great work! -Jill

I just returned from visiting my brother for perhaps the last time. He has advanced lung cancerand limited time on this earth.
I had been feeling stuck and unable to move forward with things at home. My husband has Alzheimer’s and I am dealing with some burnout. After my visit with my brother and witnessing his courage along with the sorrow of the situation, I am now compelled to LIVE my life, and make the most of it.

Hi Jill,
Thanks again for great advice. It really begins with desire. If you have enough desire or compelling reasons why to achieve a goal it definately makes it easier to push through a low spot. I have learned to associate pain with NOT following through and pleasure with following through. One can develop desire by focusing on, thinking about how pleasureable it will be to achieve goal. This will give you energy as you begin to beleive it is possible. For example the more I think about and look at my gorgeous wife the more I desire her!

BRIAN- Right on. In Napoleon Hill’s work Think and Grow Rich, he affirms the starting point of all success is desire. If one can master redirecting their energy towards where they want to go, they can master anything. -Jill

One can aim to move a foot within a minute or to do some small thing before their stove’s time goes off in 15 minutes. The idea of the action is not to achive the goal but to build motivation. (or as you called it momentum).
A week ago, I came up with this way of puting it: “Motivation is not something we have; It’ssomething we do.” It helped me get oil changed in two cars and get a colin exam scheduled and completed.

RICHARD- What a great distinction. I have heard that sentiment applied to love, and you have artfully demonstrated that it also applies to motivation. Cheers! -Jill

Writing things down is the single most powerful thing we can do toward achieving our goals, and yet it’s the absolute hardest thing to actually do! I write every day and have for 15 years. I can’t imagine where my life would be right now if I hadn’t taken this action.
Thanks for this great suggestion, Jill! I’m backing you up, this really works in a big way!
Happy blessings~

You are absolutely right about writing the goals down and then, when the motivation wanes to just push your way through.
I know this.
But still I need to hear it again and again. One day perhaps it will be an ingrained pattern, but not today. Probably not tomorrow either. So thanks for reminding me.

Been writing goals for ages and achieved many worthy goals with great satisfaction. Now, in the twilight of life, we’re happy and can look back at our life with satisfaction. My biggest mistake about writing goals? Writing on pieces of scrap paper and put them in my pocket. At the end of the day my wife would put my soiled clothing with notes and sometimes my water-proof watch in the washing machine. Needless to say, my goals got “washed” and erased whilst the watch kept ticking. Solution? Write your notes into an electronic notepad or better still into one of those new mobile phones and text or email the notes home. Cheers, Henryb

Great tip on motivation.
Another way to follow through is to find something concrete with which you can measure your progress. If you see you’re making progress, usually that itself is enough of movitation for you to keep following through.
